Tinea Pedis (Athlete's Foot)

Basics

This is a superficial cutaneous infection caused by a fungus known as a dermatophyte. The other name used to describe a tinea infection is ringworm. This infection appears between the toes and soles.

Description

  1. Itchy, burning, or stinging sensation between toes and soles.
  2. Moist skin between toes.
  3. Areas between the toes may appear macerated or fissured.
  4. Areas of erythema, scaling, or peeling.

Who Are We

General

  • Prevent the infection from spreading to others. Advise the patient to not share any clothes, towels, or toiletries. Discourage them from the use of shared bathing or swimming areas while the patient has an infection.
  • The patient should keep the feet dry: wear open shoes, do not wear socks of synthetic material, and keep the area between the toes.
  • The patient should also dry the feet twice daily before applying for the medicine.

Medical

  • Imidazole: Clotrimazole 1% cream topical applied twice per day for four weeks. If the are no improvements after 4 weeks the patient should be referred.
