Cutaneous Candidiasis

Basics

This is a superficial skin infection caused by Candida albicans. The infection commonly affects certain areas of the body: under the breasts, intergluteal cleft, axillae, the groins, nail folds, neck folds, peri-anal, perineum, and the groins in infants.

Description

  1. Red raw-looking patches
  2. The lesions appear moist (weeping)
  3. It has peripheral outlying white pustules, red scaly lesions which become confluent

Management

General

  • Exclude diseases that cause immunosuppression, such as HIV and Diabetes Mellitus.

Management

  • Imidazole: Clotrimazole 1% cream applied three times per day for 14 days.
