The most important South African apps for doctors

EMGuidance

by EMG Technologies

This is probably one of my favorite applications to use at work. The application provides a mobile/web platform for health care professionals to access several treatment guidelines, protocols, tools, and information on certain medications. It also provides a section where the doctor can learn about new topics. The application has two hidden gems, one is the “ICD-10” codes and the other is the “Interactions” section. However, I spent most of my time reviewing the information regarding a particular medication. The “Interactions” section is perfect because we tend to prescribe medications with a few drug-drug interactions. The application also allows you to download the guidelines so that you may be able to access them offline.

SA Clinical Guidelines and EML

by Jembi Health Systems

This application replaces the hardcopy version of the Standard Treatment Guidelines and Essential Medicines List for South Africa. It is very useful and every South African doctor should have this application on their phone. It provides basic guidelines for health care workers working at a primary or district level of care. The application also includes a very useful pediatrics section. Once downloaded, it is easily accessible during offline mode which is meant to help you in cases when you do not have any network signal. It is also updated frequently.

LabTrak Barcode Scanner

by Devson Software

I think it is safe to say that this application is present on every medical intern’s phone. The application allows for quick access to the NHLS TrakCare Lab Webview website without having to provide login details every time you want to access the results. This is because it saves your login details. The application also comes with a barcode scanner which is extremely useful. This barcode scanner helps you scan the barcodes instead of having to type every single letter. The application is not free. Currently, the “Pro” version costs around R49.95/month, and to be fair to them, it is completely worth it! However, on the other side, one will always question why doesn’t the NHLS have its own free mobile application, meh.

SA HIV/TB Hotline

by Aviro Health

As stated in their description, this application is provided by the National HIV & TB Health Care Worker Hotline in South Africa. It is funded by the National Department of Health and run by the Medicines Information Centre (UCT). It is such a great application to have because it provides a wide variety of information regarding HIV and TB for both the adult and the pediatric population. One of the great features of the app is the inclusion of guideline posters. These guideline posters make a great job at summarizing some of the most important information regarding the management of TB and HIV.

Wardworx

by Wardworx

This wonderful free application allows the health care worker to manage tasks effectively. You can create teams, wards, and a list of patients under each ward. Each patient may be assigned tasks that need to be completed as well. One of the most important features of this application is the addition of “team collaboration”. This app was brought to us by the same brilliant team that brought, “The internship organizer.”
