“Ngwelezana Hospital, a 516 bedded hospital, is designated as a Tertiary Hospital for King Cetshwayo, Zululand and Umkhanyakude District in Region.
It is the only Hospital in uMhlathuze Sub-District functioning as a level I, level II and level III hospital.
The hospital receives referrals from 18 Hospitals in Region IV for Secondary and Tertiary Care.” – KwaZulu-Natal Health

How was the accommodation?
Not really. Its out of hospital (like 10-15mins drive) It was fully furnished, they had tried providing pots, utensils, TV, couches. Just that previous group of doctors damaged the material.
How was the level of supervision and teaching?
Depends on the rotation
1.Internal medicine- threw us under deep water and we had to fend for ourselves.
2. Paeds (done in Queen Nandi) - highly supervised, nothing happens without consultant knowledge.
3. Surgery - good supervision but we never got any surgical procedures done, just did bloods and preparation of patients for theatre.
4. O&G - highly supervised, MOs were easy to find wherever you need help. Just a very exhausting rotation.
5. Fam med and rural - very minimal supervision, teaches you that you can now work alone (2nd yr).
6. Psych - highly supervised, nothing goes without consultant knowledge.
7. Ortho - brilliant.
8 Anaesthetics- brilliant ED - just above brilliant.
How was the clinical exposure?
Only Gen Surg lacked practical exposure. Others were very good. But also Gen Surg improved after we left because we addressed it with the intern curator.

Yes - X-Rays, Blood Gas Machines, Ultrasounds, CT-Scans, MRI Scans, NHLS

Did you have a social life? What kept you busy/entertained?
Does allow for anything and I mean anything. There are places in town for a good time (if you know what I mean), some are closer to residences. If you are a gym freak, there's Cafe gym in 5ways mall, there's eGymini next to Queen Nandi. If you are a soccer or Netball player there are teams for both inside the hospital that train daily and usually the soccer team holds games on Wednesdays (work and play league). For extreme sports, Mvubu lodge, St Lucia and somewhere in Mtunzini there are extreme sports (quad biking and paintball).
Any general comment/advice?
There is no Uber nor Bolt here. Try and be friendly to the guys who are already there and get cab drivers numbers. It's a bit expensive though. So if you have a friend with a car, consider riding together and help them out with fuel Also learn to change a Tyre very quickly, road isn't too good.
