CMSA accredited hospitals for diplomas

The CMSA and the Colleges

Look, I am going to start by saying that the information that I have currently is a little bit outdated. I found it by scavenging around the internet. It appears to be an official document coming from the CMSA from August 2015. Although outdated, it might give you an idea of what hospitals are CMSA accredited.

For those who are new to medicine, CMSA stands for the “The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa”. From their official website, we can see that it was founded in 1954 and was registered as a non-profit making company in 1955. Apart from other roles, the CMSA is responsible for acting as the national examining body for all medical professions in South Africa.

The CMSA is made up of 29 colleges, each with its own entry requirements in order to get a diploma or a fellowship. For example, The College of Anaesthetists, offers an opportunity to register for a fellowship FCA(SA), a diploma DA(SA), and a sub-specialty certificate in critical care. Continuing with this example, we may also see that currently, a diploma in anaesthesia costs around R 12 625. They also share the examination structure, the requirements as well as other useful information. Under the requirements, we can see the following: 6 months supervised training at a teaching or CMSA-approved hospital OR 3 months supervised training at a teaching or CMSA-approved hospital and 500 points in a completed logbook. As you can see, in order for you to acquire a diploma in anaesthesia, you will need to perform your training in a CMSA-approved hospital.

What are the different types of diplomas?

There are several types of diplomas, each having its own requirements and examinations. Sometimes you will see these titles written such as Dr. Becerra Estevez, DA (SA).

  1. Paediatrics: DCH(SA)
  2. Obstetrics: Dip Obst(SA)
  3. Anaesthesiology: DA(SA)
  4. Primary Emergency Care: Dip PEC(SA)
  5. Opthalmology: Dip Opth (SA)
  6. Mental Health: DMH (SA)
  7. HIV: Dip HIV Med(SA)
  8. Internal Medicine: H Dip Int Med(SA)
  9. Surgery: H Dip Surg(SA)
  10. Orthopaedics: H Dip Orth(SA)
  11. Family Physicians: H Dip Sexual Health & HIV Med(SA)

Where are they CMSA-approved hospitals?

As I mentioned before, the information that I have managed to find is a bit outdated as it was written in 2015. I will try and find a more updated document. However, it is worth knowing that even if the hospital that you are currently working at is not “CMSA-approved” you may approach your consultants and try get a diploma via another hospital that offers it.
